I’ve been experimenting with the iPhone’s 2 megapixel camera. My results are definitely not as good as my old SLR. However, I take that with a grain of salt since I could never make a phone call with my SLR.
The iPhone’s Camera App. was designed for simplicity and ease of use. Simplicity they achieved, ease of use well almost. The main gripe to all iPhone owners is the difficulty of pulling off a good self portrait. The reason for this is the small touch screen shutter button which snaps on release. Combine that with the thinness of the device. It’s almost always results in some sort of blurriness. Well, unless James Cameron has a 15,000 watt light pointed at you. Even then if you don’t have a steady hand results still might very.
After you’ve managed to take a decent picture. You have a few options on how to share your newly created photographic masterpiece. However not one of those is to share it with another phone or even another iPhone. The easiest way to share them with your friends is by emailing them directly or to Flickr where it’s uploaded to your account. Once it’s uploaded and your near a computer I like to do a little photo editing with Flickr’s partner Picnik.
Picnik is an online photo editor. The reason I like this so much is that I don’t have to open Photoshop and it’s connected with Flickr so I don’t have to send files around to another site then back to Flickr.
Aside from being available to Flickr users it can also be used by MySpace, FaceBook, PhotoBucket and Picasa. They do have a Premium Account which is $24.95 year. Which I might try if my iPhone photography skills take off. But for all other purposes… I’ll stick with the free version for now. If I really need to do some advance photo editing I’ll email it to myself and crack open
Lightroom a or Photoshop
a and edit there.
I can’t finish this post about iPhone photography with out talking about the Jailbroken iPhone Camera Apps. First up is the CameraPro App which is a 5 shot only demo App. Which retails for like $29.99 which I was thinking about buying. Either the lack of funds or the newer freeware App called Snapture kept me from doing that. If have an iPhone and want to hack it to get these Apps just google: iJailBreak
CameraPro and Snapture are both great starting points for the future of iPhone Photography. I would like to see better exposure settings and a quicker shutter along with anti shake. All of which can be done in software. The iPhone 2.0 software which is do out later this year along with the release of the 2nd generation iPhone. It should have a better stock camera App from Apple. We might also see some big time players setup to the iPhone SDK plate with their own camera application including Nikon a & Canon
a
I would like to see cases that equip different types of external lens to create macro and wide angle shots. My prediction for the future of iPhone Photography… Camera companies Nikon & Canon will come out with iPhone Cases with multiple lens to switch between along with their own software for the iPhone. These cases should be sold combined with an App code to download free from iTunes where the App will retail at $9.99 and the Case + App will retail for $29.
This is just one photographer’s hope that these two powerhouse camera companies take on each other in the iPhone Arena!
